A date release has set ‘Guardians Galaxy Vol. 3’ in China

In another sign of the return to China for Marvel after a long drought, Disney/Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has set for a date release on May 5. This season’s finale will hit North American cinemas on May 5 and international distribution will start on May 3. (See the new China poster below.)

Guardians of the Galaxy

Following a three half year period. Which no Marvel movies gained entry. Into the world’s second largest box office market. This marks the third Marvel title to secure a theatrical release in China. Following Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home in June 2019. And Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame in April 2019, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania became the first titles to hit the screens last month.

Neither Wakanda Forever nor Quantumania was instant hit China during February former having released elsewhere since November 2022 latter suffering from reviews not favourable, plus Chinese New Year hangover being the first Marvel movie hoping bring audiences back into cinemas. In general, outside of Avatar: The Way of Water, Chinese viewers have not been overly interested in Hollywood films recently; however, there is still hope.

In terms of historical exchange rates, the original Guardians film made just over $86M in 2014, and the sequel made nearly $101M in 2017.

According to a Fandango survey in late December, Guardians 3 is the most anticipated movie of 2023 in North America.

After losing Zoe Saldana’s Gamora in GOTG3, Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill must rally his team to defend the universe and protect one of his own. This mission could very well lead to end of Guardians we know them it not successfully accomplished.

Quantumania Shazam have recently released China same day. The market filled with Fury Gods (which starts today — i.e. today), Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves on March 31, and The Super Mario Bros Movie (starring Pratt) on April 5.
